Personally I hate the frantic pace of the holidays. I don’t like shopping all that much so going to the mall with masses of people does not appeal to me. I probably make a trip or two to the mall during Christmas and get everything I need to do done in that one or two trips.
I love to keep things simple, some might say I over simplify but honestly I’m just fine with that. I don’t think you need to overdo everything, if you do that’s A-ok it’s just not my jam.
I find these simple ideas keep me from getting overwhelmed.
Let go of the things you can. This year I’m not sending out Christmas cards. So if you usually get one don’t think I’ve forgotten about you.
I love home it’s my place but I don’t decorate over the top. I’ve always kind of erred on the side of less is more so this stays true to my style anyway. I don’t want it to be a chore I want to enjoy it. I’m working more now and have less free time so it just makes sense. Plus, I don’t love the taking down the decorations so this makes that whole process much easier!
I love lights and fresh greens, those are my go to staples along with the tree. It feels like Christmas but still feels like home.
Hosting can be stressful. Over the years I’ve hosted 18 Christmas days some while pregnant, some with babies and toddlers and some years 40 people. I’ve learned that it’s ok to bring out the paper plates for dessert, no one cares. You can’t possibly set a stellar table for a huge crowd so I’ve let go of that too. Recent years there are about 20-25 of us. Everyone brings something and I basically get the house in order. This year I plan to order some of the food so I can just enjoy my family.
Christmas morning I love to make a nice breakfast for the kids. Typically I’ll do a French toast casserole and some egg dish. I love this quieter part of the day before everyone else arrives. Time to enjoy with them, reflect on our blessings and what the day really means to us.
With three teenagers I’m a long way from the years with three car seats. Time has a way of getting by so quickly and I know these years with them are fleeting. I want to be present and take it all in and not be stressed out.
Lastly, I think that if we keep in mind the things that matter most we can let the other things fall away. It’s not about the stuff it’s about being together and our Savior.
Much love to you all.
See you tomorrow with my favorite things to keep on hand for wrapping gifts.
