Three Ways To Make A Room Feel Cozy

Winter is in full swing here in Western New York. Today I’m sharing my ideas for making the house cozy. It doesn’t have to be winter to use these ideas for all you southerners.

I love white lights. I love the way they warm up a room or an outdoor space. I keep a string of white lights down the mantle all year long. At night, they give off just enough light that you can turn everything else off. We have a strand strung across the backyard all year long as well. Something about looking out there and seeing the twinkle of the lights makes me happy.

Something that’s big here during the colder months is the fireplace. Nothing like a fire going to make the house cozy. In my dream scenario, I would have a wood burning fireplace. In real life, we have a gas one. It works well and really warms up the room and it’s still pretty to look at.

Ever see a photo or a movie with a room full of candles? There’s nothing like it. Add a few candles around for a warm glow. If you don’t want to use real candles because of small children or pets the flameless ones* are pretty and the give you a similar feel without the worry.

Great ideas! I always pack my white lights away after Christmas and regret it as soon as I do.

Hmm, yes a fire roaring in the fireplace and candles burning. My favorites! I didn’t think of leaving white twinkle lights out all year on the mantel. They are on my back porch though. Good idea!
    Your house looks very inviting!

I have a thing for white lights. I have a strand that runs across the yard in the summer and the ice rink in the winter and i love looking out and seeing them!!

We keep a string out on top of the kitchen cabinets all year long. One is also strung in the gazebo for those sweet evenings we want to eat or just sip wine out there. LUV white lights!!

Susan, I’m so happy you’ve joined us for Farmhouse Friday! I didn’t realize you live in Western NY. Are you buried in snow right now? I love the white lights on your mantel. Great idea!

Thank you Jill! We didn’t have one that worked for a few years and added this when we renovated.

I have a gas log fireplace also & I love it. It keeps the room a lot warmer. Candles, yes. White lights outside, yes. How about lots of pillows & soft throws? I have a throw on the back of just about every couch, loveseat & a few chairs. Enough to keep you cozy in case you are in the middle of watching a movie or reading a good book.

Hey Susan, love the lights…great idea for the mantle all year round. I just got some flameless candles so excited to set them out!! I agree with the fire place…we have a gas fireplace as well but I always regret not putting in a real wood burning fireplace. If I ever build another ( smaller ) home it will have one for sure!! The storm is just missing us as well…we might get 6 – 10 inches out of it & that’s nothing ; )
Have a great weekend my friend!!

I really like the idea of the string of white lights. My family room has a fireplace so the mantel is the obvious place for the lights. But my living room is where I’d like to pop up the coziness. Any suggestions of how to incorporate the white lights when there is no fireplace mantel?

I have a thing for the string lights. They come in handy when you just want a little light! You could attach them to your console or TV cabinet or around a doorway or window.
