Hello!
I hope your week is going well!
Over the years from both the blog and friends & family I’ve been asked about choosing a paint color.
I put together a few of my favorite tips to share with you.
What colors are you drawn to?
If you find yourself drawn to a certain color it’s a pretty good clue that it’s something you love. Keep those colors in mind.
How do you want the room to feel?
Do you want the room to be dark & cozy or light & bright. This should help narrow down the field.
Are you going neutral?
This can be paralyzing because there are SO many choices! Narrow down your neutrals to a few (less than five) of your favorites.
Buy the samples, it’s worth it!
You know the samples you can buy? Buy them. In the long run, it’s worth trying it out if you aren’t sure! If the sample size isn’t available go ahead and buy a quart of your last two color choices if you still aren’t sure.
Find rooms you love on Pinterest and home decor magazines and use those colors as your guides.
Make a board on Pinterest of rooms you love. Once you have 10 or so look over the board and see what the rooms have in common. I bet you’ll find that they are similar in color and you can start there.
Short and sweet, just what I need. All of the remodel shows on tv seem to be saying paint your house gray, inside and out. Cover your light oak kitchen cabinets with white paint. Use gray mosaic tile as a band across your shower enclosure. Always choose granite countertops (or Quartz, or cement, or natural stone, depending on the episode). Have ceramic or stone floor tiles.
The problem is, I can’t stand gray, in any shade. I fought to escape a long, deep depression. Gray is depressing to me. And I grew up with pine and other wood cabinets made by my grandfather; I like our light oak cabinets. I figure this fad of painting everything wood will pass, and it’s a bigger deal to try to go back to wood than it is to paint it. And I have fibromyalgia and arthritis so stone tile is a killer. Laminate is best for me.
Your post on choosing paint colors really brought this issue to the forefront for me. I know what my favorite colors are, and my husband’s are very similar. I think this may give me the courage to go with my conservative tastes, and not be overly influenced by other experts. As in most things, I will take all advice into consideration, then make my decision. Sounds like a therapy session, but it works. Thank you.
Very helpful post – good tip about how you want the room to feel. I recently painted a room in my favorite white, it was the look I wanted, but the room felt cold. I painted again with a softer white and I got the clean, fresh look without the space looking stark and cold.
I love color. I love painting. I love redecorating. But boy do I have trouble picking out a paint color!

For over a year ive had my heart set on painting my living room a medium sage green. I have so many samples taped on the walls. I have off white woodwork and doors ,so im not feeling it will be to dark. I love the vintage, cottage look and have alot of distressed furniture.
Now im getting confused because so many people think I should go with a medium beige and accent with greens and teal. That sounds pretty good too
Judy if that’s the color you want to paint it I say go for it!
