I was watching Barefoot Contessa and saw her make these little treats. I made up a batch for an after school snack for the kids. She calls them elephant ears, I always called them hearts. You’ll need puff pastry, sugar and cinnamon. You can watch her video on how to fold them here.
Thaw the pastry, sprinkle half the cinnamon sugar mix on the counter or cutting board, place the pastry on top, use a rolling pin to make the dough a bit larger about 13″ x 13″, it doesn’t need to be exact. The sugar mix will get pressed into the dough, sprinkle the up side with the other half cinnamon sugar mix and then fold two sides in, then in again (they should meet in the middle) then fold those together. You’ll have six layers. Cut into pieces with a sharp knife so you don’t smash the dough. Put on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper cut side up and bake.
I used both sheets and less sugar than her recipe.
They bake up in no time, 450 degrees for about 6 minutes on one side and flip baking another 6 minutes.
Next time I think I’m going to bake them plain and drizzle with a little confectionary sugar glaze. The great thing about these is you can easily make them sweet or savory!
