I’m a house person. I love looking at houses. I wish I could flip houses, I’m always looking at the overlooked homes and thinking of ways I could pretty them up. I look at the homes for sale both here and around the country. Do you do that? Here are some easy, affordable ways to add curb appeal.
If I asked this question of my family I know they would know my answer! If you could change one thing on the exterior of a home what would it be? My first answer would always be add shutters! This is just a personal preference but I think they instantly add charm! You can put shutters on the main door, windows or all your windows. We have them on all the windows on three sides of the house and a pair on the back porch window.
This one is the most obvious. Paint. It’s by far the least expensive way to add personality and curb appeal. Paint the front door a bright color or your shutters. Or just freshen up your paint. A fresh coat on the trim and railings makes the house look well cared for.
Seasonal flowers are a great way to add curb appeal and color. I love going to the nursery. I have a few local favorite spots. I tend to change things year to year and try new flowers but one constant is hanging baskets on the porch. You can add flowers to pots and planters. I love when the front door is flanked by urns with flowers spilling over the sides.
Window boxes, planters, milk cans, etc. I love flower boxes! I did an article for Houzz on how to build a simple window box. You can find it here. Filled with pretty trailing vines and flowers, you can’t beat a flower box.
Make sure the house has a house number and it can be seen. Ever look and look and can’t find a house number? We have ours in a couple spots but my new favorite is the one I made for under $5 out of antique barn wood! You can see my post here if you missed it!
I think the other really obvious and least costly is attention to detail. Homes that have freshly cut lawns and trimmed hedges just look neater and that is appealing. To most people I anyway! I don’t like things too perfect when it comes to the landscaping. I like this a bit rustic and not too manicured. A fresh batch of mulch and pulling weeds does wonders for curb appeal!
The American flag, I can’t imagine my house without the flag. It just speaks for itself and makes the house seem more welcoming. For a few dollars, you can add a holder and buy a flag that lasts years. Or add smaller ones like I did to our vintage milk can.
What your favorite trick to pretty up the house?
Thank you so much for coming by! I know I don’t thank you all enough for spending a few minutes with me but I TRULY appreciate each and every one of you that stops whether you’re a long-time friend or a new visitor! Thank you!! Have a beautiful day. xo Suz
