I love all the tobacco baskets, they are so pretty but they can be SO expensive! I got to thinking about making one myself. At first I wanted to make it out of the rolls of birch that I found, but they were more like paper when I looked closely. I searched the craft store and found sheets of coated burlap. I thought it might work so I gave it a try. It was pretty easy to put together and it great for corraling magazines. It’s not strong enough to carry around it’s more to set on a table as a container to put things in rather than sturdy like a traditional basket. Does that make sense?
Here’s how I made it. I cut the first sheet of burlap into 1″ strips the long way the 20″ length. I did a basic weave pattern, over under and stapled the ends. The cross strips I cut 1″ strips the short side (16″ it’s cut off in the picture) from the second piece of burlap. I added the criss-cross strips. I wrapped and stapled the outside and then covered the outside with a few extra strips to make it a little sturdier. If you want to make a wood veneer one Lucy at Craftberry Bush made a beautiful one.
Here’a look at the package of burlap. I will be combing the stores for materials to try to make other versions of this. It was really fun to put together and super simple with just a few supplies! I have four more sheets of the burlap so I’m already thinking about a couple smaller ones I can make!
